CLAI AGM, December 2010

Comparative Literature Association of Ireland

First AGM - University of Limerick, 27 November 2010

Since the creation of CLAI in November 2008, the association's activities have been limited to one committee meeting and one post-graduate symposium a year. There has been sufficient consistency in our activities – regular e-mail communication between the members of the committee, regular announcements on the CLAI website and through the CLAI newsletter, and the annual publication of the symposium proceedings – and sufficient interest in them for us to now consider creating a fully-fledged association, with more ambitious goals and more visibility. All were encouraged to bring their ideas to the fore at any stage.

1.       Executive Committee Elections:

At the same time as the call for papers for this symposium was issued, a request for nominations re positions on a new executive committee was also issued. The results are (as proposed and seconded):

a.        President: Brigitte Le Juez (Dublin City University)
b.       Secretary: Victoria Rios-Castano (University of Ulster)
c.        Treasurer: Michael Kelly (University of Limerick)
d.       Membership Officer: Catriona Leahy (Trinity College Dublin)
e.        Webmaster: Cormac O Cuilleanan (Trinity College Dublin)
f.         Postgraduate Representative: Nina Shiel (Dublin City University)
g.        Ordinary members:
§          Paolo Bartoloni (NUI Galway)
§          Jean-Philippe Imbert (Dublin City University)
§          Marieke Krajenbrink (University of Limerick)
§          To be co-opted: 2 representatives from other Irish higher education institutions

2.       Proposed activities 2011-2015

It was proposed that the postgraduate symposium become a biennial event, alternating with conferences and/ or national workshops/ collaborative work, followed by proceedings/ special issues, etc.

a.        2011. National workshop/roundtable on the state of CompLit in Ireland today. This would consist of a research workshop where colleagues from would present their work and discuss new possible directions for potential collaborative projects and publications. Location and date to be decided.

b.       2012. Fourth International Postgraduate Symposium . Location? Date (ideally not end of November any more considering weather conditions)? Topic?

Dr Jean-Philippe Imbert suggested that we organised our next CLAI postgraduate/senior academic conference as a joint event with an international symposium taking place in Dublin at 2012.

c.        2013 - 14 . Activities to be determined. Possibilities: one-day thematic symposia in different institutions, start of an Irish CompLit journal (possibly online)…

d.       2015. DCU has offered the European Network of Comparative Literature Studies to host their biennial conference in Sept 2015. Other countries and universities are also interested in hosting the event, and the decision will probably be finalised in 2013. The offer was discussed in the light of a joint-event with CLAI.

•  Publications / Website

a.        The 2009 Postgraduate Symposium Proceedings. The proceedings are being prepared and will be published on our website in the coming months.

b.       Bibliography. It was suggested that a CLAI bibliography be organised on our website: members would enter details of their comparative publications and, where possible, attach downloadable links to their articles/work (possibly through their Institutional Repository).

c.        Website. It was felt that, as a result of increased activities, the website requires some changes to accommodate new types of information and organise existing ones more clearly. To accommodate the symposia's proceedings (and a possible online journal), there will also be a publication page.

•  AOB.

None.

Due to incompletion of the Committee, pending agreement to elect a Vice-President on the Executive committee, need to decide on membership subscription rates, and on the possibility of an in-house publication, an EGM will take place early 2011, hopefully gathering more members than were able to attend on this occasion.
